You all have heard it now that the new Apple iPhone 6 Plus bends very easily. Basically, everything started a few days ago when first users were reporting bending issues with their devices. They claimed their devices got bent for no reason. But no one really cared to this until today when more and more people started to complain about the same thing.
Then, Unbox Therapy, a tech channel on YouTube made the official iPhone 6 Plus bend test – will it bend video. And as you could see from the video, the phone got bent badly even though he wasn’t applying a lot of pressure. This brings up the question: Why does the iPhone 6 Plus bends so easily since it is made of high quality aluminum?
Apple is known to make high-end premium devices with high quality materials. The iPhone 4 and 4s are made of glass on the back and steel on the sides, the 5 and 5s are made of aluminum and glass and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are made completely of aluminum.
You can think that since it is aluminum, the phone will be sturdy and will not have any problems. That is partially true. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus feel great on the hand and don’t make creaky noises. But the aluminum body is very thin. As revealed on the 6 Plus tear down video, the phone is basically a single thin aluminum piece with all components inside.
It doesn’t have any magnesium allow metal frame like Android devices have and especially the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4. Even though their exterior is plastic, inside they have a strong magnesium alloy which make the phones strong and rigid.

The iPhone 6 Plus doesn’t have this kind of frame inside the body. So, it is basically a thin piece of aluminum and since there is nothing to support it, it bends very easily. This explains why it bends when you put the phone on your pocket for long periods of time. The phone can’t handle the stress and there is nothing to support it so it gradually bends to release the stress.
