Install CyanogenMod 13 ROM on Asus Zenfone 2

Asus’ current flagship device is only running on official Android 5.0 Lollipop even though there are plans for a possible 6.0 Marshmallow update. The Asus Zenfone 2 made the news as one of the first smartphones to come with 4 GB RAM and that is certainly something interesting for power users who love opening loads of apps at the same time.

While Lollipop is not bad by any means, it is certainly not as good as Marshmallow. Android 6.0 comes with a plethora of features and overall optimizations to make the phone better. If you own an Asus Zenfone 2 you will be happy to hear that an official Marshmallow update will hit the device in the future. If you can’t wait until then for the Marshmallow goodies, then you can try CyanogenMod 13.

CM13 is a custom ROM based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and comes with features that aren’t available on a stock firmware. CyanogenMod is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) with extra features from the Android community. It is a great way to get a taste of Marshmallow and see what’s working and what’s not.

According to the developer, the ROM comes with some bugs – RIL (phone calls, mobile data) is not stable, SIM 2 cannot be disabled and USB Mass Storage is unavailable.

How To Install CM13 ROM on Asus Zenfone 2

There are a few things you need to download in order to get CyanogenMod 13 with Gapps up and running on your Asus Zenfone 2. You need the ROM and Gapps files, as well as a custom recovery.

Now that you have all the required files, you need to boot into recovery and flash the ROM and then Google Apps to get the full Android experience.

Step 1. Download and transfer both files, the ROM and Gapps to your Zenfone 2.

Step 2. Turn the phone off and go into TWRP.

Step 3. Go to ‘Backup & Restore’ and make a full Nandroid backup.

Step 4. Wipe data and factory reset. This will prevent any possible bootloops.

Step 5. Go to ‘Install’ and choose the CyanogenMod 13 ROM.

Step 6. Then flash Marshmallow Gapps right after the ROM.

Step 7. Reboot your phone.

Wait for the phone to boot up. You will enjoy the pure stock Marshmallow experience on your Zenfone 2 thanks to CyanogenMod 13.
