Why iPhone 6 Isn’t Good For Gaming (Performance Review)

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are Apple’s best selling devices ever. Apple managed to sell more than 10 million units in just the first week. That is a new record for the Cupertino based company. And this comes from the company itself.

The iPhone 6 sold more units than the iPhone 6 Plus. The main reason is because users weren’t ready to switch to a huge phone like the 6 Plus. The huge 5.5″ would be very uncomfortable for many Apple users who have used only iOS devices on the past.

But only a few days later, the first problems started to come. Phones wouldn’t charge, they would become very slow and some 6 Plus units were easy to bend. And this impacted sales of the devices because as reported, less units started to sell because these problems were deal breakers for many.

Now, there’s another reason why you seriously should consider not to buy the latest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and that’s the performance. Well, both of the devices perform extremely well on usual performance tests like navigating through different applications, checking social media and taking pictures. Basically, everything considered as light to normal usage is perfect on the 6 and 6 Plus and this comes as a result of the great optimization of iOS and hardware that Apple uses.

But when it comes to heavy usage like playing games and multitasking, these devices might not be the best on the market. Both of the devices come only with 1 GB RAM which are more than enough for normal usage. At least on iOS. But for multitasking, 1 GB RAM is simply not enough.

You cannot use multiple apps at the same time. You can, but when you switch to another app, the program you just closed will freeze and will not run on the background.

Secondly, the benchmark scores are not the best. On the popular benchmark app called Geekbench 3, the iPhone 6 got a score of 2920 while the 6 Plus got 2662. The lower score of the 6 Plus is expected because it has a higher resolution screen and the same A8 chip.

Last year’s flagship phone, the iPhone 5s gets 2500-2600 on Geekbench 3, only 300 less than the 6 and almost the same as the phablet. Does it matter? Yes and no. Apple optimizes its devices so they can be smooth and lag free for a long time but they won’t be future proof. You can play the latest games now, but when the new iOS update comes out, the phone will not handle it very well, just like the iPhone 4s with iOS 8.
