Install Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA ZIP on Galaxy S4 (SGH-i337)

AT&T has started rolling the official Android 5.0 Lollipop update out to Samsung’s old flagship device, the Galaxy S4. This variant of the phone is exclusive to AT&T and comes with the model number SGH-i337. The update has been out for a couple of days and you have probably updated your Galaxy S4 to Lollipop already.

If for some reason you have been disconnected from the internet, you can download the update directly from your phone by going to Settings > About Phone > software Updates. If you receive no notification when you search for a Lollipop firmware for your AT&T Galaxy S4, it means that the carrier hasn’t released the update to all units. If you are patient, you will be happy to hear that AT&T will release the update for all units within a few days. If you can’t wait to get official Lollipop Touchwiz firmware going on your phone, there is another solution.

When a phone receives the notification for an OTA update, the phone gives you the ability to download it. Then it asks you to install it right away or later. If the second option is chosen, the OTA ZIP file will stay in the internal memory of the phone until the user decides to install it. During this time, the file can be captured and pulled away from the phone. This has happened on the Samsung Galaxy S4 i337. A user managed to pull the official Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA ZIP file for the AT&T variant of the Galaxy S4. With this file, you can update your phone to Lollipop without having to wait for the notification to arrive on your phone.

How To Install Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA ZIP file on AT&T Galaxy S4 SGH-i337

The first thing you should do is to make sure that the phone status of your Galaxy S4 is stock and not modified. If it says modified, you will have to flash a stock firmware using Odin because the OTA file will not work. In fact, a modified device doesn’t receive the OTA notification at all, so if you flash a stock firmware check the update from the settings menu before installing the manual file.

The installation process is straightforward and is the same as flashing a custom ROM.

  1. Download the Galaxy S4 SGH-i337 Lollipop OTA ZIP file and move it to your phone.
  2. Turn the phone off. Remove the battery to confirm that it is completely off.
  3. Take your phone and press the volume up, power and home buttons at the same time to boot into recovery.
  4. There, go to Apply Update From External Storage or Install ZIP from SD Card and choose the Lollipop OTA zip file.
  5. This will apply the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update to your Samsung Galaxy S4 i337.

New Guide

  1. Download official I337UCUFNB1 firmware on your PC. Flash the Odin firmware through Odin.
  2. Download the NB1 to NJ4 OTA update ZIP file. Move it on your phone and apply the update through stock recovery.
  3. Reboot your phone and check for a software update on the Settings menu. A notification will appear and you will be able to update.
  4. If you do not get the notification, download the ZIP file from the first guide and extract it to receive a .cfg file. Replace the .cfg extension with .zip and apply the update through recovery.

Enjoy Android 5.0 Lollipop update on your AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4. There are many things to get excited for.

    • Unfortunately, it cannot be installed using Odin. You best option is to download a stock KitKat firmware, flash it on your phone using Odin and then apply the update.

      • Wow, will have to download about to gigs today. Well, OK! Thank you very much. I am currently downloading the lollipop update and then I’ll download the KitKat firmware, flash it with Odin, and then apply the update. If I get it all right, I’ll comment here. THANKS AGAIN! 🙂

  5. Thank you very much it worked
just check following pointers and verify
    1. Get to stock firmware 4.4.2 from wherever or whatever version.
    2. Apply 4.4.4 update using external SD card
    3. Download lollipop firmware (zip file) using link provided
4 Extract the zip file rename the extracted file to .zip then copy to SD card
5 Reboot to recovery and apply update

    • Thanks. I tried to update with the .zip file but no luck but then I unzipped the file as you mentioned, renamed with .zip and it is now working.

      • Brother first what operating system your computer, if windows should enable disable information in folder options to not hide type of file extensions desconhecidos.Ao do this you will see that your files have extensions shown example .jpg or photos . gif, .exe programs and then 5.0update file is a .zip file to extract using winrar or winzip you will see a folder with the 2400258.cfg file, .cfg this end you should switch to .zip . and so proceed with the update in recovery mode . I have helped . my contact on google + is [email protected] forgive my English but I’m Brazilian. but I have an American cell .

  6. I successfully did the update .I’ll explain how i did .i was in 4.4.2 with rooted NI1 firmware .so i flashed the NB1 firmware thru odin n then i manually flashed the NB1 to NJ4 OTA UPDATE N THEN LOLLIPOP OTA .tru zip file manually. It was successful n nice .but little slow .its ok thou .and after update my internal storage decreased to 9.7gb from 16gb .is it normal mr.Ronaldo .or do u have a fix for it

  7. Note to everyone who has 4.4.2

if you get any error in updating to lollipop first you need to flash stock 4.4.2 even if you already have 4.4.2

I learned it in this guide: http://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26464

  8. I am trying to flash NB1. I am currently on I337MVLUFNI2. I am getting
Re-partition operation failed error. Tried different cables and PCs but
the same error keeps on haunting me. NB1 to NJ4 OTA update ZIP file didn’t work either. I am getting tmp/sideload/package.zip error.

    • Do you already have a custom ROM on your phone? I’m getting the same error trying to reinstall GoldenEye v53 ROM (I installed the full version the first time and I’m wanting to install the slim version now because I’m guessing it doesn’t include all the shizzy Samsung apps.)

This might be a good resouce for folks with SGS4 SGH-i337 (with a certain Baseband, though I’m not sure which) who want a rooted Lolipop custom ROM:

      http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/how-to-installed-custom-lollipop-rom-t3135396/post61352064#post61352064

With my phone, everything worked fine for a couple weeks or so, then I started having issues with random powering off/reboots/bootloop, etc. (btw – this is NOT an issue with “the power button getting stuck,” that’s total BS, despite what a lot of sites/YouTube videos have to say about this; it’s a software issue.) This may have been an issue with some of the apps I turned off (it shouldn’t have been, but who knows.) From what I can tell, depending upon the type of Bootloader your actual phone has (and I have no idea what that even means) it seems that from my research, the only option is GoldenEye. I don’t know why this is exactly, and I know I was successfully able to install Kangapop on another S4 (not sure the Baseband, etc.) so who knows. This is why I’m now starting to hate Samsung phones, hate Android and will probably buy an iPhone 6+ 128 GB as my next phone (I never buy new and I’m never under contract.)

      Good luck…
